Chapter 9
Stretch a bow to the very full,
And you will wish you had stopped in time;
Temper a sword-edge to its very sharpest,
And you will find it soon grows dull.
When bronze and jade fill your hall,
It can no longer be guarded.
Wealth and rank breed insolence,
That brings ruin in its train.
When your work is done, then withdraw!
Such is Heaven’s Way.
Extension:
How to avoid the phenomenon of “full loss”in ordinary life?
In this chapter, Lao Tzu has made a lot of example to explain “full loss”theory. If you pour water into a glass, when the water is full, you will overflow. In other words, when the bow is full, the bow will continue to jerk and the string will be pulled apart. This all tells people to stop at the right time, do not to show rich status and be arrogant about that. These are definitely not just for the so-called successful leaders.
In life it is also suitable for the general public. In today’s society, many people with mental illness have such problems. They pursue perfectionism and want to do the best, that create a lot of pressure invisibly. Each person is a different person, just like your cup-volume, your bow profile is different, so your limiting point is naturally different.
So you don’t have to reach the public standards of success, because each people is different. All matter has its fate, enjoying the process of pursuing the goal is more important for us. That is to explore the nature of yourself. Therefore, you will be relieved to face the final result, and you will natural be humbled.
When you don’t reach your goals, you have no regrets, because you have experienced and grown. Conversely, when you reach your goal, you naturally don’t want to cling to it. So all things are not demand full marks, in the second place can bring your more happiness.
