故事发生在东方快车上，大雪使快车停下，一个美国乘客被发现离奇地死在了包厢里面，身上有多道伤口，然而包厢的门却是反锁着的。这一切打破了车厢内的表明的平静，每个人都开始怀疑，猜测谁是的凶手。波洛着手处理这个意外案件，抽丝剥茧层层推理，并与每个嫌疑人进行约谈。随着故事推进，死者身份慢慢浮出水面，隐藏在案件背后的另外一个悲剧展现在读者眼前，凶手到底是谁？他是真的已经逃之夭夭了吗，还是还隐匿在车厢里，波洛一次次推翻自己的结论…
