Many people will start to take one week off around Spring Festival Eve.
除夕左右，人们会开始为期一周的假期。

Before the Spring festival, people decorate their homes with paper-cuts and spring couplets.
春节之前，人们贴窗花和春联来装饰自己的家。

They are mostly red, because this color represents good luck in Chinese culture.
窗花和春联大多是红色，因为在中国文化中，红色代表好运。
By the end of the Chinese New Year’s Eve, people need to sweep the dust in their houses.
除夕夜结束之前，人们还需要打扫除尘。
The reason is that ‘dust’ shares the same pronunciation of ‘old’ in Chinese, so people believe sweeping the dust can help them get rid of the bad luck in the past year.
这样做的原因是，汉语中“尘”和“陈”同音，因此人们相信，除尘可以摆脱旧的一年里的霉运。
On the Chinese New Year’s Eve, the whole family will get together and enjoy the family reunion dinner.
除夕这天，全家团圆，共享年夜饭。
People in the north always have Chinese dumplings, while people in the south have the New Year’s cakes made by sticky rice.
北方的人们吃饺子，而南方的人们一般吃糯米做的年糕。
At the same day, people of older generations give lucky money, wrapped in red packets, to young people. By this, good luck can be brought to the receivers.
这一天，长辈也会包好红包，给年轻一辈压岁钱。这样好运就可以传递给收红包的人。
Besides, we also see beautiful fireworks at night and hear loud firecrackers. It is said that the sound of firecrackers can drive away the Monster Nian.
此外，我们还可以在晚上看到绚丽的烟花，听到响亮的爆竹声。据说，爆竹声可以驱逐年兽。
